Building and Grounds
The Main Administration and Library building was opened in 1940 with an addition to the building in 1994. In 2011 4 new classroom areas were constructed under the BER project. All buildings have reverse cycle air conditioning. The school has lawn areas, nature-play area, playground equipment and a vegetable garden. A large shelter provides an undercover play area.
Extra Curricular Activities
Many opportunities exist for students to participate in extra-curricular activities at Mil Lel.
Sport
Students participate in 2 Sports Days in Term 1; our own Internal Sports Day and then a few weeks afterwards, we join with 6 other small schools to compete in the Small Schools District Sports Day which is held at Blue Lake Sports Park. Students in Yr 3-5 are able to participate in out of school hours sports which include T-Ball, Football, Netball, Soccer and Hockey. Our school is also an Auskick Centre. Upper Primary students have the opportunity to participate in various carnivals during the year and can choose to try out for various SAPSASA teams also.
Performing Arts
We encourage participation in the Mt Gambier Eisteddfod and have students involved in a number of categories such as public speaking, music and debating.
Students in Years 5, 6 and 7 have the opportunity to participate in Choir. This involves our students joining with other schools to form a choir which performs at the South East Music Festival in Term 4.
Camps
Students in Year 6 and 7 participate in a week long camp to Canberra every 2 years (odd years, e.g. 2017, 2019). They join with students from neighbouring small schools and visit The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, Questacon, Royal Australian Mint, Telstra Tower, Australian Institute of Sport and National Botanical Gardens to name a few.
On alternate even years, we have a school camp which is held over 3 days/2 nights. Destinations have included The Grampians, Port Fairy and Cape Bridgewater.
Jump Rope For Heart Demonstration Team
Students in Year 5, 6 and 7 are able to try out to be a member of the school’s skipping demonstration team. Each year they travel to various schools to support and promote other schools’ involvement in Jump Rope For Heart Day which raises money for the Heart Foundation.
Christmas Pageant
Every 2 years our school participates in the Mt Gambier Christmas Parade. This is a fantastic community event and students look forward to this opportunity.
Governing Council and Parent Club
Governing Council is jointly responsible for the governance of the school with the Principal. It is made up of elected parent representatives, a staff representative and the Principal. Parents who are elected at the Annual General Meeting hold office for 2 years. Council meetings are held twice a term. Sub-committee meetings, including Finance, are held once a term.
Parent Club is made up of interested parents who support school community needs. They take a lead in organising fundraising activities, special lunch orders and social events. They also assist with school uniform supplies. Parent Club meet twice a term.
Pastoral Care Worker
Our school has a Pastoral Care Worker who works 7 hours per week. They have a background in social work and their role is aimed at supporting and promoting student wellbeing at our school. Examples of how the Pastoral Care Worker supports students at our school include assisting SRC fundraisers, running lunch time activities for students and helping with various class activities. If needed, they also act as a support person to assist students with personal/social needs where appropriate. Student involvement with the Pastoral Care Worker is voluntary and parents are able to request that their child not engage with the Pastoral Care Worker if they desire.
